Government and Industry accelerate world-leading farm technology
Issued by Hon Nicola Willis and Hon Todd McClay
What happened
The Government and industry launched the AgriZeroNZ Early Adoption Accelerator on 10 June 2026, committing up to $51 million in Crown funding matched dollar-for-dollar by industry partners to help New Zealand farmers adopt emissions-reducing farm technologies.
What's at stake
- Who feels it
- New Zealand farmers (dairy, sheep, beef, arable); agricultural technology companies and research organisations participating in AgriZeroNZ Early Adoption Accelerator; industry partners matching Crown funding.
- Money in play
- $51 million Crown funding (matched dollar-for-dollar by industry partners, up to $102 million total co-investment). AgriZeroNZ has already invested $79.9 million across 18 companies, research projects and trials.
- Timing
- 10 June 2026 (programme launch). Expressions of interest open from 10 June 2026 for projects over next three years (ending approximately 10 June 2029). Technology rollouts: EcoPond already available; boluses expected 2026; methane inhibitors, probiotics and vaccines expected over next few years.
- How it works
- AgriZeroNZ programme (existing government fund for emissions-reducing agricultural R&D); Early Adoption Accelerator co-funding model administered through existing Crown funding mechanisms (likely Treasury Vote: Primary Industries or equivalent).
- Key context
- Confirm eligibility criteria and application process for Early Adoption Accelerator projects — expressions of interest now open on AgriZeroNZ website.Audit current farm technology adoption baseline — programme targets practical on-farm innovation at scale; assess which emissions-reducing tools align with your farm systems.Track technology pipeline rollout: EcoPond in-market now; boluses, methane inhibitors, probiotics, vaccines rolling out over next 2–3 years. If your company is seeking co-funding partnership — understand the dollar-for-dollar matching model; Government funds flow only where industry has committed matched investment.Monitor broader AgriZeroNZ investment outcomes — $79.9 million already deployed across 18 projects; expect publication of learnings and technology performance data.
- Wider effects
- Climate change mitigation (agricultural emissions); rural productivity and profitability; global market expectations for lower-emissions food and fibre; agricultural competitiveness in export markets; Te Tiriti obligations on emissions reduction.
