Budget 2026 — More social homes, better targeted

What happened
Housing Minister Chris Bishop announced $69.2 million in Budget 2026 for 1,800–2,250 additional social homes over three years from 2028/29. A new "Flexible Fund" replaces fragmented previous categories with a model that lets Crown respond to local needs (one-bed, family-sized, iwi-led, community-housing) rather than forcing proposals into rigid silos. The Social-housing waitlist has reduced from 25,483 to 19,704 since late 2023.
